Coronavirus (COVID-19) impact on World Vision operations

The community of Nueva Esperanza has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Nueva Esperanza has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

Nueva Esperanza is the name of three community neighbourhoods near the city of Cochabamba, Bolivia. Most families here are indigenous Aymará and Quechua farmers who moved to escape the poverty they experienced in the Andean highlands. They came hoping for a better life, but in Nueva Esperanza, which means “New Hope, they found a different kind of poverty.

In this rapidly growing suburban area, there were few jobs and limited government services like schools and healthcare centres, minimal access to clean water, and very little sanitation and waste management. Even the physical environment was challenging " the terrain was salty in some areas and rocky in others, making it hard to practice agriculture. As a result, most people looked for work in small trades, transportation or service industries, while trying to grow enough food to feed their families on the side.

Thanks to the generosity of Canadian sponsors like you, life in Nueva Esperanza has improved. Children and families have grown stronger and are working together to overcome their challenges. Your support has opened doors that will have a lasting impact for years to come.

Education

99% of children attending primary and secondary school, graduated
72% of the children in the community can now read and write
200 school teachers received training on child-centered learning
Tutoring has helped 634 children

Health and Nutrition

1,200 children are enrolled and being monitored in nutritional programs
10,000 people now have access to clean water
More than 800 parents learned about healthy nutrition
700 families now have access to sanitation facilities

Child Protection

More than 1,200 children learned about child rights
Local networks are empowering children/youth to advocate for their rights
50 community leaders are working with local authorities to improve child well-being services
