Coronavirus (COVID-19) impact on World Vision operations

The community of Serrana has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Serrana has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Serrana community is located in Alagoas, which is the smallest of the Brazilian states, as well as the poorest. Most families live in homes made out of wood and mud. Serrana has a tropical climate, with temperatures ranging from 20℃ to 37℃ . The majority of families struggle to provide for their children through subsistence farming, growing sugar cane, manioc, beans, cotton, corn, tobacco, and rice. However, the land is not always conducive to growing crops because it is so dry.

Access to water is a pressing concern in this drought-affected region. Vegetation is sparse, and part of the area lies in a small, desert-like zone. Roads are rough and unpaved, which makes transportation difficult and goods more expensive. In the wet season, roads are often flooded, and the community can experience periods of isolation.

Community gardens were established, while parents and school staff learned to improve children’s nutrition by using local ingredients to their full potential.
210 clean water cisterns were installed.
30 schools run children’s literacy programs, and 180 teachers have received training.
1,100 youth joined reading programs, 200 learned about financial literacy and 650 joined sports or culture activities.
Women are leading change with 18 production groups, where members manufacture goods, pool profits and create credit opportunities.
70-member forum unites 25 communities, manages projects and upholds children’s rights.
