The community of Jeju has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Impact

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Jeju has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Jeju community is located southeast of the capital city of Addis Ababa. It is home to more than 17,790 families, 60% of which are considered to be the “poorest of the poor." The annual income in Jeju is only one-tenth of the national average. There are two major ethnic groups in the area, the Oromo and Amhara, with the Oromiffa language most frequently spoken.

The Jeju community is characterised by three land features: a highland area, the mid-highlands, and the lowlands. In the high and medium altitudes, farmers grow a mixture of cereals, vegetables, oil seeds, sugar cane, and coffee. Pastoral farming occurs in the lowlands. Unfortunately, Jeju experiences frequent droughts and famines which severely impact farming production and people's livelihoods. Families are often forced to migrate in search of water, making long-term improvements a challenge in many areas of the community.

Education

4,904 children are benefitting from additional schools and classrooms
25 Early Childhood Development Centers were established, benefiting 2,868 children
Number of schools increased from 25 to 52 since the beginning of the program
17 additional classroom blocks and 10 latrine blocks were constructed

Child Protection

98% of children feel safe in their community
Child parliaments were established in 45 schools helping fight violence against children and child abuse
Child protection training was provided to 25 Community Based Organizations and 45 school child parliaments
87% of faith leaders are actively involved in tackling child wellbeing being issues

Health and Nutrition

Proportion of births in hospitals increased from 6% to 85%.
Constructed 9 health posts and provided facilities with medicine, laboratory equipment and furniture.
Proportion of children fully immunized increased from 47 % to 96% since the beginning of the program
Proportion of sanitation coverage increased from 4% to 86% since the beginning of the program
The number of health facilities increased from 5 to 30, improving access to health services from 50% to 90% since the beginning of the program
