The community of Misamis Oriental has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!  

 
With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Misamis Oriental has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Misamis Oriental community is located on the northern coast of the island of Mindanao. The area is generally rugged and punctuated by mountain ranges, coastal plains, rivers, and valleys. The climate is relatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year. It is located outside the typhoon belt but has experienced tidal waves and flash floods over the years.

The community is characterized as being both agricultural and industrial. Of its land area, close to 60% is devoted to agriculture. Rice, corn, coconut, vegetables, fruits, beef, pigs, poultry, and eggs are its primary products. Highly valued commercial crops such as pineapple are being grown and exported to other countries.

Education
  • 83.7% of parents believe that children are safe in their communities
  • 87% of household can support the educational needs of their children
  • 98% of parents are willing to report cases of child abuse
  • 90% of parents now know how to respond to child protection issues
  • 83.2% of the parents believe that a functional Child Protection Mechanism is in place
Health and Nutrition
  • 70.5% of women exclusively breastfed their children until six months of age
  • 96.8% of households have access to safe water
  • 269 women received counselling on how care for themselves and their children during and after pregnancy
  • 90% of community groups were trained to provide guidance on child health and nutrition
  • 93.7% have toilet; and 98.9% have proper handwashing facilities 
  • 70% of children ages 6-23 months now receive nutritional meals
Livelihood
  • 80% of households now meet the basic needs of their children
  • 50 savings groups were formed and are teaching families on how to save money and access loans
  • 71% of farmers now have the skills and resources to carry out improved farming techniques
