The community of South Cotabato has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Impact

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in South Cotabato has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The South Cotabato community is located in the southern part of the island of Mindanao. The region's geography ranges from flat land to rolling hills to mountain ranges, and is comprised of relatively high mountains, lakes, and some inactive volcanoes.

In South Cotabato, rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year. Temperatures reach between 36℃ and 38℃ during the day, and fall to between 23℃ and 32℃ at night, depending on the elevation. The hottest period is usually from April to May, while August to December is the coolest time of year. Farming is the major source of income in the community, and while South Cotabato is rich in resources, many families experience poverty. The major agricultural crops include rice, corn, coconut, pineapple, asparagus, papaya, and banana.

80% of World Vision registered children improved their performance in school
9 high-performing students were referred for a college scholarship
2,920 children improved their learning through extra tutoring
83 books were developed to teach kids about their cultures
51 parents and teachers were trained to provide a positive learning environment

Health and Nutrition

2,265 parents and caregivers learned about nutritious eating habits
53 health workers and volunteers were trained on providing health and nutrition services
A health project helped promote primary health care in 20 villages by advocating for better services
400 pregnant women and lactating mothers learned about the importance of breastfeeding
300 families now have access to clean water

Livelihood

A mechanical grinder helped to increase local cassava production by 400%
80% of households now have their basic needs met
195 savings groups are guiding the community on financial education and how to access loans to grow their businesses
91 people learned about entrepreneurship to start their own businesses
