The community of Paroumba has graduated

In 2020, the community transitioned from sponsorship to self-sufficiency and World Vision is no longer on site. Because of the dedication and partnership of Canadians like you, local people and organizations have been equipped to continue leading the community’s development – and that is something to celebrate!

Impact

With the help of your generous and loving support, life in Paroumba has transformed. Children and families are much stronger now. The community has met its goals, and its members are working together to tackles new ones. Your support will have a lasting impact for years to come.

The Paroumba community is located approximately 670km from the Dakar, the country's capital, in southeastern corner of Senegal. The majority of the population are of Fulani ethnicity.

The climate is characterized by hot, dry winds that raise temperatures to 40°C for 6-8 months of the year. Access to potable water is a major problem, despite the presence of small streams and the fact that the water table is located between 5 and 30 metres. The vegetation is comprised of shrubs and trees, with an important grass cover. The landscape suffers from repeated bush fires, clearing, and abusive exploitation from charcoal producers.

Paroumba is predominantly rural, with more than 90% of the population making a living from rain-fed agricultural and raising livestock. The area leads the country in cotton production, and is the second largest producer of mangoes, bananas, and revenue from peanuts. Despite these favourable economic conditions however, the region is still the poorest in Senegal.

Education

The school enrolment rate for boys increased from 55% to 75% and for girls from 54% to 81% over 5 years
42 classrooms were rehabilitated to create a safer and stimulating learning environment for students
The school completion rate for boys and girls increased from 59% to 72% and 63% respectively in 5 years
The proportion of schools with clean drinking water increased from 51% to 67% in 5 years
The proportion of schools with separate latrines for boys and girls increased from 49% to 56% in 5 years
2 preschool schools were built and equipped to help children set a solid foundation for their education
The program repaired 25 water points and constructed 20 latrine blocks in schools
1,200 children who were not registered at birth were given birth certificates to enable them to enroll in school
The proportion of schools with temporary shelters dropped significantly from 74% to 9% in 5 years

Health and Nutrition

The proportion of children under five who are malnourished reduced from 30% to 9% over 5 years
552 mothers were trained on the prevention of malaria and acute respiratory infections in children
The proportion of women who gave birth to a child in a health facility increased from 32% to 59% over 5 years
The proportion of exclusively breastfed children in the first six months improved from 72.4% to 88% over 5 years
28 community health workers and 48 local leaders were trained to support HIV/AIDS awareness.
11 health huts were rehabilitated, and 22 health huts and 4 health posts were equipped
15 food fortification units were put in place allowing families to provide nutrient-rich foods to their children
1,000 women were trained on how to prevent malnutrition in children
To reduce malaria, the proportion of pregnant women who slept under a mosquito net increased from 60% to 95% over 5 years

Livelihood

The proportion of households with access to credit increased from 0% to 85% over 11 years
The proportion of households with sufficient dietary diversity is currently at 59%
World Vision helped establish 9 gardens, 4 fish ponds, 2 dairies, 1 honey farm and 1 pig pen to improve the resilience of households
250 women were trained in agricultural techniques and gardening
300 people were trained in milk production techniques and 160 people were trained in fish production techniques
175 savings groups with more than 4,200 members were established
More than 300 people were trained, and 3 local committees were set up for disaster mitigation
The proportion of households with a secondary source of income is currently at 41%
