Working With Children in Burundi

Coronavirus (COVID-19) impact on World Vision operations

In support of public health recommendations outlined by the World Health Organization, some sponsorship program activities have been temporarily suspended due to COVID-19. Activities may include sponsor queries and correspondence, sponsor visits, gift notifications and gift deliveries. These temporary suspensions may affect the information you receive from us in the coming weeks and months. Learn more about our response to COVID-19.
Since achieving independence in 1962, Burundi has struggled with violence, including a brutal civil war in the 1990s and ongoing political and ethnic tensions today. In 2015, Burundi was ranked by the Global Hunger Index as the world's leading nation affected by hunger for the third year in a row. The high rate of malnutrition is blamed on political instability, high unemployment and natural disasters.

Attention to malnourished children, savings groups and agricultural improvements for higher crop yields all serve to focus our work with children in Burundi. We support families with child growth monitoring and nutrition education. Our savings groups empower members to build capital for basic daily needs. Agriculture trainings teach farmers new techniques for growing healthier crops.
