Working With Children in Thailand

World Vison has been supporting children in Thailand since 1972. In early work, aiding refugees fleeing war was a focus. But for most of our history in the country the focus has been on community development, supported by sponsorship. Another key project for Canadian donors in recent years was the End Trafficking in Persons program, working to prevent the trafficking and exploitation of children in Thailand and five other countries.

Canada’s most recent sponsorship-funded work in Thailand was in the Jatujak community, near the Gulf of Thailand. Children and families in Jatujak gained a strong respect for child rights, strengthened their education and learned practical skills to help them succeed in the workforce. When sponsorship support phased out of Jatujak recently, it was noted that some six thousand students had received educational help from World Vision and 99 per cent of parents stated they planned to keep their children in school.
